01/

Fund

There are four main ways a business can get more money: 1) increase sales; 2) grant funding; 3) borrow money; and 4) attract investors who buy a stake in the company. We focus on items 3 and 4, as these are the ways to raise significant sums of money in a reasonably fast way to finance growth.

Acquire

Once you have raised funds it’s time to start spending them. For many entrepreneurs who are used to bootstrapping, this phase may seem unusual or even uncomfortable, but the reality is that you have raised money to acquire something, whether that’s assets or a new team of people or another business. So let’s do it.
03/

Consolidate

This is where the hard work begins. It is also the area that decides whether the acquisition is a successful one or not. This is where you put two companies together, and at least one of them is going to face a significant change in values and culture. The important thing is to have a detailed plan for putting the businesses together. The reality is that it won’t go exactly as you plan it, but without a plan you’re at the mercy of circumstances.

Exit

In many respects the Exit phase is the same as the Acquire phase, except that you are sitting on the other side of the transaction. The mantra here is prepare, prepare, prepare. Prepare your business so you can maximise your exit valuation. Prepare your business so the due diligence process goes smoothly. Prepare yourself for the emotional rollercoaster of selling your business.
